Daniel’s Theme Governing All His Prophecies:
Chapter 2 of Daniel is very important. Here is found not only the theme of the chapter but also the theme of the whole book: The triumph of Christ over unbridled, human temporal power. All of the stories, all of the prophecies pertaining to Christ, are a part of and enhance this theme.
Daniel does not just present a prophecy. He does it in the context of a story. The story holds the reader’s interest as the writer unfolds a prophecy that is going to be expanded in further parts of Daniel and carried through to the end.
Daniel’s interpretation of the dream of Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylonia, leads into a most significant prophecy. There are to be four world empires that stretch until “the latter days.” In the latter days, this Stone “cut out without hands,” indicating divine intervention, will crush the feet made of iron and clay. Christians have generally agreed that this Stone symbolizes the Christ. Since this crushing event is to occur in “the latter days,” this event must be related to the Second Coming of Christ.
