Names for GOD, Part 1.       

Elohim and El.      

One problem with interpreting these verses literally is that the reader has forgotten that the book of Daniel, being written well after the Babylonian captivity, follows the Hebrew concept of God developed during that captivity—that God is Elohim, a non-anthropomorphic Being, that is, a God without a body or human appearance (Chapter I).

The word for God is El, a part of the Elohim tradition, which during and following the Exile, of which Daniel was a part, had combined with Jehovah to shine as one concept of God—a masculine-feminine, non-anthropomorphic, divine Deity (Dermott Ch IV). This masculine-feminine nature of God may be reflected in Jeremiah’s two advents of the Branch, each having a human messenger crowned with a divine title similar to “God with us.” (Chapter OD
