Personal Reflections
*******
Allan had many other personal adventures, some in New Hampshire and Maine when he and his brothers hiked and camped during summer vacations. Allan met Lynn at Florida State University, and after they both graduated, they married in 1965. Allan was an English teacher in a high school and then a college professor, and Lynn was a school librarian in a high school, then an elementary school, and then a college. Once school let out in June, off they went on trips from Florida to New England in their Volvo station wagon (a wedding present from Lynn’s parents) packed to the hilt with a tent and camping gear. During these jaunts, besides hikes up many mountains, they would spend hours in used bookstores.
During the early years of their marriage, before children, they went on an adventure of a lifetime. They traveled across the Atlantic and rented a Ford Anglia in Belgium with a tent that folded out from the roof rack. They camped for a month in Germany, France, Switzerland, and Italy and then a second month in England, Wales, and Scotland. They were in Paris during the American landing on the moon. What an unforgettable experience!
Allan, having fallen in love with New England during his summers over the years and especially the coast of Maine, he and his wife, Lynn, moved from Miami to Maine where Allan earned his doctorate in Education at the University of Maine, Orono, and Lynn was Librarian at College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor. Then, Andrew James was born and was named after his maternal grandfather, James. Then, they moved to Frostburg, Maryland, where Allan taught English and Reading at Frostburg State University. Then, their daughter, Danica Janemarie, was born (Janemarie after her two grandmothers, Jane and Mary). They all four spent summers camping in Maine and New Hampshire and then moved to New Hampshire where they continued their respective careers and the joys of parenthood.
